The City of Johannesburg hosted an inspiring book launch at the Wilro Park Library on 9 January 2023. The star of the day was 13-year-old Bokang Phiri, the author of “Yami and the Ball”. In the book, Bokang’s writes about his life, recounting the challenges he faced after he was diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB). However, the narrative transcends personal struggles, aiming to inspire children and make a positive impact on communities worldwide, all the while emphasizing the paramount importance of reading. The Wilro Park Library buzzed with enthusiasm as patrons gathered to witness Bokang unveil his creation. The library, a beacon of knowledge and community engagement, provided a fitting backdrop for the event.
Attendees, particularly the younger ones, enjoyed a special reading by Bokang. The young author’s voice echoed throughout the library, delivering a message of resilience and hope. “Sickness must not hold you back from achieving your dreams. I am committed to my football too, and praying keeps me going.”
The interactive session allowed patrons to pose questions and share their thoughts. Kanelo Maanye, a young visitor, said: “I enjoyed hearing about parents who prayed to God to request their child to heal from TB.”
Thato Phiri, Bokang’s father, proudly narrated the journey of motivation and commitment that Bokang had undertaken.
“Bokang likes reading and writing stories. But most of all, he likes playing football. As a family, we advised that he publish to share his life with others as part of encouragement.
“Bokang’s book is good and caught the attention of the media. We are encouraged by what we are seeing and calling on people to read and write their own stories,” urged Phiri.
Wilro Park Library’s Sobahle Ntshangase played a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth execution of the event.
