RMB Latitudes fair to celebrate Pan-African artistic diversity

The highly anticipated RMB Latitudes Art Fair returns to Johannesburg for its second iteration, taking place from Friday, 24 to Sunday, 26 May. Organised by the team behind the acclaimed Latitudes Online platform in partnership with RMB, the Fair promises an immersive experience that unites the global community of African contemporary art.

Across the Fair’s duration, galleries, and artists from across the African continent will showcase their work within the magnificent three-acre expanse of Shepstone Gardens near Houghton.

Visitors are invited to explore every corner of this stunning indoor-outdoor venue. From marbled halls to secret gardens and dedicated sculpture pavilions, the diverse programme encompasses exhibitions, talks, film screenings, and much more.

“RMB Latitudes seeks to disrupt the conventional ‘white cube’ gallery model,” explains co-founder and director Lucy MacGarry.

“We reimagine the relationship between art and viewer by creating spaces that blur the lines between interior and exterior. This unique design dissolves the typical art-viewing environment, fostering an atmosphere where engagement with and questioning of the art occurs within a distinctly African context,” adds MacGarry.

“We also champion an egalitarian approach, presenting established galleries, alternative spaces, and individual artists side-by-side.”

Imbued with this ethos, the Fair meticulously curates a showcase of pan-African talent. The accompanying talks programme invites international speakers from diverse industry sectors, sparking stimulating discussions and placing African contemporary art firmly on the global stage.

RMB’s Carolynne Waterhouse reiterates the bank’s commitment to nurturing and celebrating artistic talent: “We are deeply proud of our longstanding support for the creative economy and the art world. We passionately believe that creativity measurably enriches lives, fostering intellectual growth and emotional well-being. Cultivating talent fosters sustainable careers, leading to meaningful economic activity and positive contributions to communities and society at large. Through this Fair, we connect clients and all art enthusiasts with a curated celebration of Africa’s rich and diverse artistic expressions.”

Co-founder Roberta Coci emphasises accessibility as a core principle of RMB Latitudes’ ethos. “We strive to create a welcoming environment where seasoned collectors and art world newcomers alike feel comfortable attending, learning, forging connections, and ultimately, acquiring art,” Coci elaborates.

The Fair extends its reach through Latitudes’ online platform, enabling collectors worldwide to browse and purchase works from RMB Latitudes exhibitors.

The RMB Latitudes Art Fair takes place from Friday, 24 to Sunday, 26 May 2024 at Shepstone Gardens near Houghton. Visit latitudesartfair.com for more information, to view the full exhibitor list, and to purchase tickets.
