Lindani Sikhakhane possesses a keen interest in innovation, pioneering ideas, and creativity, particularly within the realm of City libraries. As a librarian at Randburg Library, Lindani was recently honoured with an award for spearheading the implementation of an intelligent resource management app within the City of Johannesburg’s municipal departments. His innovative initiative secured recognition in the “Innovation in Operation” category.
The purpose of the app, as Lindani explains, is to facilitate the tracking of available information and communication technology (ICT) resources, such as laptops, tablets, and other items, across various branches. This enables efficient sharing of resources for various programmes and ensures optimal utilisation, even in times of scarcity.
The development of the app was a collaborative effort with Lindo Dlamini, a librarian from Rosebank Library.
Reflecting on the achievement, Lindani expressed his excitement and pride, emphasising the months of preparation, research, and training invested in the project. He sees this recognition as not only a personal triumph but also a significant opportunity to contribute to the City’s advancement.
Receiving the award from the Executive Mayor, Cllr Kabelo Gwamanda, and the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Group Corporate and Shared Services, Cllr Loyiso Masuku, was a humbling experience for Lindani, who remains deeply grateful for the privilege.
Looking ahead, Lindani is eager to embark on the implementation phase of the project. Currently, he and his team are engaged in case study research to further enhance the quality-of-service delivery to the citizens of Johannesburg.
Lindani envisions himself as a leading figure in the City’s library sector, dedicated to improving the lives of its residents. He sees this achievement as just the beginning of his journey and is committed to continuous self-improvement and development.
Originally from Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal, Lindani holds an Honours degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Zululand.
When asked about his motivation, Lindani says: “Nothing grows in a comfort zone; a tree grows because it is planted and nurtured underground. You need to rise from the ground and shine.” He emphasises the importance of challenging oneself and seeking guidance from mentors while advocating for the habit of reading.
Lindani’s pioneering spirit and dedication to excellence serve as an inspiration to his colleagues and the wider community, promising a brighter future for library services in the City of Johannesburg.
