This Transport Month, construction of Rea Vaya’s Phase 1C will expand into one the of the City Centre’s main transport terminuses and urban hubs. As part of the City of Joburg’s Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit Phase 1C project, the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) will begin the construction of the BRT stations in the Gandhi Square Precinct on behalf of the City of Johannesburg’s Transport Department.
The Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system is already responsible for transporting tens of thousands of passengers daily. The Gandhi Square precinct is a well-connected transportation hub, with public transportation options including Metrobus, Gautrain Bus, and taxis.
It is also home to many A-grade high-rise corporate office buildings and is a popular tourist attraction and a busy urban hub. The Gandhi Square precinct BRT stations will form part of Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System Phase 1C trunk route operations from the Inner City to Sandton to Alexandra, along Rivonia Road and Katherine Drive, and the trunk route from Parktown to Alexandra, along Louis Botha Avenue.
The stations will be on Commissioner and Albertina Sisulu streets bordered by Rissik and Joubert streets in this phase. The project involves the erection of the BRT Station buildings in the road median with two station modules similar to the ones west of Rissik Street on the same trunk bus route.
The new stations will have dedicated BRT bus docking and bypass lanes in the road median and outer mixed traffic lane to maintain traffic around the station.
Due to the scale of this development, there will be traffic disruption initially from around 9 October 2023 due to the BRT infrastructure project. Road users and pedestrians are to please be aware that traffic impact will be taking place in this area from October 2023, with an anticipated construction period of 12 months.
To minimise inconvenience, we recommend all motorists to consider the following alternate routes:
Alternate Route 1: Using Marshall and Helen Joseph streets for eastbound direction
Alternate Route 2: Using Anderson and Helen Joseph streets for west bound direction
“We know that construction can be disruptive and is a temporary inconvenience. Once completed, the BRT will significantly improve the efficiency and sustainability of public transportation in the Gandhi Square Precinct,” said JDA Acting Chief Executive Officer Siyabonga Genu.
“We apologise for any delays or disruptions that the construction of the BRT station in the Gandhi Square precinct may cause. We are working to minimise the impact of construction on motorists and pedestrian traffic,” he noted.
