The City of Johannesburg is pleased to provide an update on the ongoing efforts to restore power following the M1 tunnel fire incident. City Power acknowledges the inconvenience caused and is working diligently to bring electricity back to all affected areas as quickly and safely as possible.
Key Progress:
• 88kV Cable Installation Complete: The critical 88kV cable replacement project is finished, and testing is underway this morning.
• Power Restored to 85% of Customers: City Power has successfully restored power to a significant majority (85%) of affected customers.
• Parktown West Restoration: Specific streets in Parktown West, including Delorme, West, Johnson, Ameshof, Wolmarans West, Showgrounds, Smith East, and Smith West, have regained power through the use of interconnector cables.
• Newtown Restoration Imminent: Installation of a new cable between Bree substation and Newtown Junction is complete. Testing is underway, with power restoration expected for Newtown Junction Mall and surrounding areas today (pending final assessments).
Affected Areas:
This outage, caused by vandalism, impacted customers in Parktown, Newtown, Braamfontein, the Johannesburg CBD, and surrounding areas.
