Amidst fervent anticipation from an enthusiastic crowd, Cllr Lubabalo Magwentshu, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, officially inaugurated the 2024 Telkom Netball season (TNL) at the Ellis Park Indoor Arena.
This marked the start of a thrilling journey set to unfold until 23 June 2024, as the arena proudly plays host to the TNL, showcasing top-tier netball talent from across the nation under a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the City of Johannesburg Department of Community Development and Netball SA.
The Telkom Netball League’s presence in Johannesburg serves as a testament to the power of collaborative efforts in the face of economic challenges. This partnership underscores the city and Gauteng Province’s shared visions of becoming the “Sporting City of Choice” and the “Home of Champions” respectively, as sports emerge as catalysts for growth and inclusivity.
In his opening address, MMC Magwentshu expressed the City of Johannesburg’s unwavering commitment to advancing women’s sports, citing the Telkom Netball League as a significant stride towards advocating for equal opportunities in sports.
The opening ceremony was a spectacle, with netball supporters treated to musical performances by an in-house DJ and drum majorettes. The festive ambiance was further heightened by the participation of Cecilia Molokwane, President of Netball SA, who joined in the celebrations with singing and dancing, encapsulating the euphoria of the day.
With 16 powerhouse netball teams in contention, the 2024 season promises unparalleled excitement. Netball enthusiasts can catch all the action on DStv SuperSport or stay updated via social media channels.
