City Power is pleased to announce that repairs to the damaged electricity infrastructure in the M1 tunnel are complete. Full power restoration is expected this morning. To safely restore power, City Power will request an emergency isolation. This will result in a temporary power interruption between 8:30am and 10am today (14 May 2024) as the load is switched back to the Braamfontein substation.
Yesterday, testing of the newly installed 88kV cable was successful, and it was subsequently energised.
Today, the team will move the load from temporary measures, such as interconnectors and generators, back to the repaired 88kV cable. This cable, along with others, was damaged by a fire caused by theft and vandalism nearly two weeks ago.
While the permanent solution is implemented, City Power has been supplying power to most customers using temporary interconnector cables. These cables have limited capacity, preventing full restoration at once. As of yesterday, over 90% of customers have had power restored through these temporary measures.
The outage, which began on 1st May 2024, impacted customers in Parktown, Newtown, Braamfontein, the Johannesburg CBD, and surrounding areas.
To avoid overloading the network during restoration, please keep all appliances unplugged.
