Thato Legodi, a rising star in the Telkom Netball League, is being celebrated by the City of Johannesburg for her exceptional talent and dedication to the sport. Legodi’s journey began at Moletsane Sport Complex in Soweto, highlighting the vital role of community sports facilities in nurturing local talent.
City of Johannesburg employee Rabelani Ndou, known for his commitment to quality service delivery, played a crucial role in supporting Legodi’s development, showcasing the impact of structured development initiatives.
He recent performance in the Telkom Netball League garnered significant attention. Despite the Diamonds’ loss to Sunbirds (42-40), Legodi’s exceptional skills were undeniable, earning her the Player of the Match title. Her talent and strategic plays left a lasting impression on both her current coach, Charlotte Nthabiseng, and the technical staff, solidifying her reputation as a “game-changer” on the court.
“Even for those unfamiliar with netball,” says Ndou, Legodi’s local coach, “it’s evident that she’s a formidable presence on the court. Her opponents often find themselves challenged by her strategic plays and undeniable skill, earning her the moniker ‘ngwana wa tshwenya’ (a problematic child) among her adversaries.”
Reflecting on her journey, Legodi acknowledges the challenges she faced but emphasises the unwavering support from coaches in Johannesburg and beyond
“I began playing netball at the age of 11 under the guidance of Coach Ndou,” she shares. “It hasn’t been an easy road, but with their support, I’ve been able to overcome obstacles and pursue my passion.”
As Legodi’s sporting career flourishes, she remains grounded in her values and a deep sense of community. “I am deeply grateful for the opportunities and support I’ve received,” she expresses.
“It’s important to inspire others and uplift my community, just as I’ve been uplifted.”
