Region C recently observed World TB Day with a commemorative event aimed at raising awareness about tuberculosis (TB) and its impact on the community. Held at the Siphumlile Clinic in Snake Park, Ward 129, Soweto, the event gathered individuals, health professionals, and organisations under the theme ‘Yes, You and I Can Stop TB’. TB remains a significant global health challenge, with South Africa bearing a considerable burden of the disease. Simon Ntwampe of Anova highlighted the urgent need for continued efforts to prevent, diagnose, and treat TB, particularly in light of drug-resistant strains. Siphumlile Clinic, situated amidst mine dumps contributing to air pollution, witnesses a high number of TB cases. Many patients, including Cynthia Mzimela, who shared her journey at the event, face challenges in completing their treatment. She urged residents to seek medical attention promptly if they experience TB symptoms like persistent coughing and night sweats.
Beyond raising awareness, the event underscored the importance of hygiene practices in TB prevention. A handwashing demonstration emphasised the significance of proper hand hygiene, crucial in reducing TB transmission.
Vivienne Emmanuel, Programmes Manager in Region C, stressed the need for robust patient tracking and support to ensure treatment completion.
Collaborations with organisations like Anova have been instrumental in advancing these efforts.
Through education, advocacy, and community engagement, Region C’s World TB Day event served as a rallying point in the fight against TB.
By fostering collective action and promoting proactive health measures, the community takes strides towards TB elimination.
