The past few days have been a hive of activity in Alexandra township as the City of Johannesburg’s Region E Integrated Environmental Awareness Programme Plan was being implemented. The plan seeks to restore pride and dignity of the community of Alexandra by creating a safe, healthy and hygienic environment through collaborative and partnership efforts. As part of the plan, the City unveiled Alexandra Rat cage project ambassadors at the Alex San Kopano Library last week.
Ephraim Pooe, who is part of Region E’s Citizen Relations Management team, says: “There will be a total a total of 36 educational ambassadors will be deployed in all nine wards in Alexandra to educate residents about keeping their environment clean.”
“Ke Kasi Yarona, which is the overarching programme, is also aimed encourage the community to become aware of the environmental hazard as well as to have them take responsibility for the cleanliness of their environment
“The initiative will also include sports as well as arts and culture to get the youth on board. It will have recycling initiatives to turn Alexandra waste into an economy opportunity,” he adds.
The initiative will be implemented in wards 75,76,81,91,105,107,108,109 and 116 within the Region E.
Region E Director Liziwe Ntshinga-Makoro has called this intuitive a milestone move and is delightfully looking forward to the outcomes of this strategy and its success.
“I hope this crucial initiative reaches its potential as the City is making a clarion call to all the residents of Alexandra to embrace and support this programme,” says Ntshinga-Makoro.
