Joburg gears up for a mass vaccination roll-out drive

In efforts to curb the devastation of the ongoing coronavirus that has ravaged lives and livelihoods, the City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Cllr Jolidee Matongo, is set to launch a mass vaccination rollout programme at the municipality’s headquarters, the Metropolitan (Metro) Centre in Braamfontein on Thursday, 23 September 2021.

The mass vaccination rollout is aimed at reaching out to Joburg officials and residents who are eligible to be vaccinated from 18 years of age and older. This is notwithstanding the special concentration of the City’s efforts and resources, which are focused mostly on residents who aged over 60 years and those with comorbidities.

Mayor Matongo urged residents and City officials to continue to faithfully follow all the Covid-19 protocols in the execution of their essential functions towards municipal service delivery.

“While we intensify the fight against Covid-19, let us continue to wear masks, keep a safe distance, sanitise and wash our hands regularly. We can only overcome this pandemic by taking the vaccination jab to protect ourselves and those around us,” Mayor Matongo said.

Residents who wish to vaccinate on the day of the launch in Braamfontein can hop onto a free Metrobus at their nearest pick-up point. The bus will ferry people to be registered and vaccinated on site in the Metro Centre. The free buses will be at identified pick-up points in all the City’s seven regions from 09h00 to take people to the Metro Centre.

For more information on pick-up and drop off points, residents are urged to visit the City of Johannesburg website www.joburg.org.za.

Additional information will be shared on Johannesburg social media accounts as well as on pamphlets to be distributed by ward coordinators in all 130 wards of the City.

During the launch, the Metro Centre will be buzzing with lots of fun activities that include aerobics to promote a healthy lifestyle. While on the queue to get a jab, one will be allowed to freely take a selfie with one of their favourite music or sport stars who have partnered with the City on the anticipated mass vaccination rollout.

Various City partners will be on site as well to assist employees and communities on various social concerns that they might be having difficulties. These include marital, financial, or emotional concerns, and other family related matters.

In support of the recently launched partnership between the City and Soweto Pride to ensure that Joburg is a safe space for the LGBTQI+ community, the City will also take its mass vaccination rollout to Dorothy Nyembe Park in Dobsonville during the Soweto Pride celebration day on Saturday, 25 September 2021.

Below are the 28 City of Johannesburg vaccination sites that are operating every day from Monday to Friday between 7:30 – 16:00 in all City regions where the Metro Centre is out of reach for some residents:

Summer is around the corner, it’s in our hands to open the country for outdoor fun with family and friends. Let’s get vaccinated. #JovaJozi #LetsVaccinate #YesToVacciNation.
