Meter Readings

All about meter readings

Once you are registered, you must link your account number to your profile by entering the PIN Number printed on your most recent statement.

Select the specific meter on your account and note the reading.

We do check the consumption against your consumption history, and if your reading is particularly high or low, you will need to give us a reason for the difference.

Your reading will be accepted, but will be verified by our meter readers.

Your reading will stay in the system until the next billing cycle. Your reading will then be used to bill you.

You can enter multiple readings during the month, we will keep a history of all them, but only the latest one at time of billing will be used.

The best time to submit your meter readings is about 15 days before the payment due date. So if your due date is 1st, then your reading should be recorded on 15th.

New connections

If  you’re building a new home, office block or factory, or moving into existing premises, you’ll need to know how to apply for water and sanitation connections.

There are two different types of new connections:

If you have bought or moved into an existing property, the account must be transferred to your name.

To open a new account, you need to go to the Thuso House Customer Service Centre, 61 Jorrisen Street, Braamfontein, to sign a Consumers Agreement on Services with the City and pay a deposit.

You will need your ID and a letter from your estate agent, landlord or conveyancer confirming you are the legal owner or tenant.

If you have bought land and are erecting a new building, the physical pipes must be connected to the municipal grid.

If you need to install a new physical water and sanitation connection you will need to contact Joburg Water. Call Joburg Connect on 0860 562 874 to set this in motion, or visit Joburg Water’s head office at Argent House, 21 Loveday Street, Marshalltown, Johannesburg.

An official will need to visit the property before giving you a quote on a connection fee.

You should allow about 21 days from the date of payment for the installation work to be complete.

The cost to convert from a traditional power meter to a pre-paid meter can be obtained from any of the Joburg Water offices.Only residents of Soweto, Cosmo City and Lehae can currently apply for a pre-paid water meter. A door-to-door campaign will be conducted by Joburg Water. Anyone taking up the offer will need to sign an agreement. You will need a copy of your ID and an account statement for the agreement.
